The short version: Rinse the vinyl, clean it with a marine vinyl cleaner and a soft brush, rinse again, dry it with a chamois, then apply a UV protectant.

Why vinyl needs care
Marine vinyl contains plasticizers plus UV and mildew inhibitors, which is what separates it from ordinary vinyl. Sun and neglect wear those out, which is why seats crack, fade, and stain.
Steps
- Rinse the seats to remove loose dirt.
- Apply a marine vinyl cleaner and work it in with a soft brush or cloth. Use the product as the label directs.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry it with a chamois.
- Treat stubborn mildew separately. See our mildew guide.
- Apply a UV protectant, such as 303 Marine Aerospace Protectant. It helps resist drying and fading. Reapply every 3 to 6 weeks in regular sun, as protectant makers recommend, and less often if the boat is covered or kept inside. If water still beads on the vinyl, the protection is likely still working.
Our rule: if any harsh chemical gets on or near vinyl, rinse it well, then protect it.
What damages vinyl
- Sun without protection. The biggest cause of fading and cracking.
- Harsh chemicals left on without a rinse. Rinse well and re-protect.
- Sunscreen left to sit, which stains seats.
- Oil-based shine products, which look good at first but damage vinyl over time.
- Covering the boat while seats are wet, which invites mildew.
- Abrasive pads and powders

Common questions
Can I use household cleaner on boat vinyl?
On seats, we stick to a cleaner made for marine vinyl. Heavy-duty cleaners are for grimy fenders, not upholstery.
How often should I protect vinyl?
Reapply every 3 to 6 weeks in regular sun, as protectant makers recommend, and less often if the boat is covered or kept inside. If water still beads on the vinyl, the protection is likely still working.
