The short version: Buy for the jobs you will actually sell. A new detailer can cover washing, waxing, and basic correction with a small kit: boat soap, a compound and polish, a machine and pads, protection, towels, and safety gear. Add specialty tools only when a paying job needs them.

The first kit
- Wash: a wax-safe boat soap, soft brushes, mitts, buckets, and a chamois for drying. If you'll wash multiple boats a day in different locations, a bucket setup beats a foam cannon.
- Correction: a heavy or medium cut compound and a finishing polish
- Machine and pads: a polisher and cutting, polishing, and finishing pads (see our tools and gear). I started with all my wash supplies and my machines from day one.
- Protection: a wax or sealant
- Stains and vinyl: a gel hull cleaner and a marine vinyl cleaner (see our vinyl cleaner picks)
- Consumables: painter's tape and plenty of microfiber towels
- Safety: gloves and eye protection, since compounds sling and some cleaners are acid-based
What can wait
- A second or third machine
- Specialty pads and brands you do not yet need
- Coating products, until you have a customer who wants one and you have practiced the prep
- Fancy storage or trailers
Look around before you buy. Watch what other detailers actually use on jobs, and add things as real customers ask for them.
What to buy first, in order
- Wash kit and protection, since every job uses them
- Compound and polish plus a machine, once you are ready to sell correction
- Specialty cleaners as customers ask for them
Common questions
Do I need a rotary or a dual-action polisher?
Most detailers suggest learning on a dual-action, because it is more forgiving. A rotary cuts faster but can burn through gelcoat in unpracticed hands. Practice on a test panel or an old boat before you take a rotary to a customer's boat.
Do I need insurance?
That is a business question we are not qualified to answer. Ask an insurance agent before you take your first paid job.
