Ceramic coating for boats: is it worth it?

The short version: A ceramic coating can last far longer than wax and make a boat easier to clean, but most of the work is prep, and results depend heavily on how well that prep is done. For a boat that gets hard use or sits in the water, it may not be worth the effort. There is no independent test of consumer coatings yet, so we do not pick a product.

What a coating is

A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a hard, glossy layer. BoatUS describes the particles as filling the porous surface of the gelcoat, forming a layer that resists dirt and UV for much longer than wax.

The real cost is prep

  • A coating only works over a clean, corrected surface. Oxidation has to be removed first.
  • As with a paint job, the bulk of the labor is in the prep, according to BoatUS.
  • A DIY coating may not match a professional application. BoatUS found it looked good but not the same as a pro job.
  • In BoatUS's test, the heavy-use topsides needed wax over the coating about two months in, while the hull sides did not.

When it makes sense

  • A boat in good condition that you want to keep easy to clean
  • An owner who wants less frequent re-protection and accepts a long prep day
  • Hulls that are not walked on or banged up, since high-use areas wear faster

When wax is the better choice

  • Heavily oxidized boats where the surface still needs a lot of correcting
  • Boats that sit in a slip with daily hard use
  • Owners who prefer a quick job a few times a year

What we do not know yet

We found no independent test of consumer ceramic coatings on boats, so this guide does not pick a product. If we recommend one later, it will be after we have tested it on a real boat and will show the results.

What we tell customers who ask: a coating is worth it if you will keep up the maintenance it needs. How long coatings really last on a boat is still an open question, so be wary of big longevity promises.

Common questions

Is a ceramic coating better than wax?

It lasts longer, but it is harder to apply and harder to fix if applied badly. Wax is easy and forgiving.

Can I put wax over a coating?

BoatUS waxed over the coating on high-use areas in its test. Check your coating's label first.
